Riparian buffers can help mitigate biodiversity declines in oil palm agriculture

چکیده

Agricultural expansion is a primary driver of biodiversity decline in forested regions the tropics. Consequently, it important to understand conservation value remnant forests production landscapes. In tropical landscape dominated by oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), we characterized faunal communities across eight taxa occurring within riparian forest buffers, which are legally protected alongside rivers, and compared them nearby recovering logged forest. Buffer width was main predictor species richness abundance, with widths 40–100 m on each side river supporting broadly equivalent levels as However, responses varied markedly among taxa, buffers often lacked forest-dependent species. Much wider than currently mandated needed safeguard most The largest gains achieved increasing relatively narrow buffers. To provide optimal outcomes landscapes, encourage policy makers prescribe requirements for key different contexts.

Do riparian reserves support dung beetle biodiversity and ecosystem services in oil palm-dominated tropical landscapes?

Agricultural expansion and intensification are major threats to global biodiversity, ecological functions, and ecosystem services. The rapid expansion of oil palm in forested tropical landscapes is of particular concern given their high biodiversity. Identifying management approaches that maintain native species and associated ecological processes within oil palm plantations is therefore a prio...

Does logging and forest conversion to oil palm agriculture alter functional diversity in a biodiversity hotspot?

Forests in Southeast Asia are rapidly being logged and converted to oil palm. These changes in land-use are known to affect species diversity but consequences for the functional diversity of species assemblages are poorly understood. Environmental filtering of species with similar traits could lead to disproportionate reductions in trait diversity in degraded habitats. Here, we focus on dung be...

Experimental Biodiversity Enrichment in Oil-Palm-Dominated Landscapes in Indonesia

Tropical biodiversity is threatened by the expansion of oil-palm plantations. Reduced-impact farming systems such as agroforests, have been proposed to increase biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In regions where oil-palm plantations already dominate the landscape, this increase can only be achieved through systematic ecological restoration. However, our knowledge about the underlying ecol...

Poor Prospects for Avian Biodiversity in Amazonian Oil Palm

Expansion of oil palm plantations across the humid tropics has precipitated massive loss of tropical forest habitats and their associated speciose biotas. Oil palm plantation monocultures have been identified as an emerging threat to Amazonian biodiversity, but there are no quantitative studies exploring the impact of these plantations on the biome's biota. Understanding these impacts is extrem...
